Because howling sounds carry farther than prey distress sounds stay on stand for 30 to 45 minutes to give those distant coyotes a chance to arrive calling more when in fact they should be calling less A coyotes acute hearing can pinpoint the source of the sounds with incredible accuracy and if they are the slightest bit wary they may simply hang up and listen to the trespasser The best way to break this impasse is to stop calling and be patient Not hearing the other coyote will eventually pique the hung up coyotes curiosity to the point that it will come in for a look and finally present a shot There are a lot of coyotes spooked and educated by impatient hunters that get up and leave the stand too soon and never see the coyote that was patiently sitting back and listening to the sounds Because howling can reach roughly twice the distance as regular calling I feel 45 minutes is the minimum time to stay on a good howling stand Gary Strader one of the best howlers Ive hunted with and longtime coyote howler and superb call maker Dan Thompson of Laramie WY both recommend avoiding a barking contest with incoming coyotes If a coyote stays out of range barking the best tactic if possible is to carefully move away from your stand circling out of sight of the coyotes last location Once in position cut loose with the universal and probably the deadliest of the coyote vocalizations the ki yi and get ready for action Howling can add a whole new challenge and perspective to your coyote hunting When done right it will surely put a lot more fur in your shed As the saying goes Try it youll like it 25 www PredatorXtreme com FEBRUARY 2012
