Stay On Stand Longer FAST OR SLOW Whats the Perfect Pace for Coyotes Punctuality is a virtue that this coyote had not yet learned My ambush site was flawless The narrow canyon led from rugged uplands and was the last obstacle before coyotes could plunge into the food infested riparian zone below Coyotes traditionally bedded above the hunting grounds at dawn and meandered to the lowlands to hunt at dusk I was situated in between in a sniper perch that any special ops soldier would have loved Even with the odds stacked in my favor the sun had long since set with shooting light a soon to be memory My watch indicated I had been on stand for 35 minutes Why so long A lone coyote howl in the distance sounded too friendly and my imagination fancied a coyote making its way toward me Suddenly like an apparition a coyote appeared below It had taken the dog nearly 40 minutes to reach me after I heard its initial howl Now it stood like a statue staring right up at me I knew the coyote couldnt see me My snow camouflage melted into the backdrop and the hand applied camouflage pattern on my T C Pro Hunter mirrored the backdrop flawlessly Even so I knew the coyote had the noise location pegged down to the square foot so I held tight and waited for it to make the first move 40 www PredatorXtreme com FEBRUARY 2012
