Mistake Free Coyote Hunting Wh at Am I Doing Wrong At one time or another weve all asked the question What am I doing wrong Correct these common mistakes and youll be skinning more predators this year As we pointed the pic kup towards home we silently hung our heads It had been a very long day making stand after stand The bed of the truck was completely void of anything resembling a dead coyote The snow was deep and the temperature was cold exactly what we believed to be ideal coyote hunting conditions As we headed east on the Interstate a coyote ran across the freeway in our headlights It was the closest wed come to killing one all day Of course this added insult to injury and we felt our frustration level rise another notch The next two hours of driving were spent discussing all of the things we might be doing wrong Was it the calls we were using Should we invest in an electronic caller Were we using the wrong sequence Were we waiting long enough at each stand Questions flooded our minds and we hoped for divine intervention to help us figure it out My partner and I were new to the sport of calling coyotes We had called and killed a few but were still struggling to find any level of consistency We put in our time and hunted very hard but werent having the success we hoped for Bottom line we were novice coyote callers and we were earning our stripes Ive never met a coyote caller that experienced immediate success All of us at some point in time have to learn from the school 46 www PredatorXtreme com FEBRUARY 2012 of hard knocks I believe this is why many coyote callers are tight lipped about their techniques They worked long and hard to learn how to kill coyotes consistently Many in the coyote calling community consider this a rite of passage Calling coyotes is a lot like golf There are literally dozens of little things that must all come together to execute a successful hunt In the beginning theyre difficult to remember and even more difficult to execute Over time they become second nature and you do them sub consciously At calling seminars Im frequently asked What am I doing wrong Just like a golfer that suffers from a severe slice there can be many reasons coyotes arent coming to the call However Ive learned there are several common mistakes we make as predator hunters Any one of these might lead to a long drive home without any coyotes in the back of your pickup Mistake No 1 Lack of Scouting I believe lack of scouting is the number one reason coyote hunters head home empty handed When I was new to the sport of predator calling I would drive down the road and select stands that looked good That was my first mistake I was going to invest the next hour of my precious hunting time in an area I hadnt scouted I could execute
