Mistake Free Coyote Hunting 48 www PredatorXtreme com FEBRUARY 2012 location I like to travel back roads a day or two after a fresh snowstorm and look for tracks Fresh sign proves there are coyotes in an area Hungry coyotes can really cover country so tracks arent the best indicator of coyote numbers Also every coyote wont cross every road you travel Talking with landowners is another good method They frequently see coyotes in their area and hear them at night If youre hunting a new area locals can typically get you started in the right direction If you want to take your coyote calling game to the next level give serious scouting a try I spend the night and early morning before my hunt howling to locate coyotes This helps me determine their exact location and count With this information I can plan my stands for the day and focus on the areas where the coyotes are most abundant If I listen closely I can also differentiate between old and young coyotes This helps me determine a calling strategy for that particular stand Ive found that very few coyote hunters spend adequate time in the field scouting Add this to your routine and youll call and kill more coyotes Mistake No 2 Dont Sit There As we approach our calling stand we are anxious to sit down so we arent spotted by our prey Oftentimes we sit as quickly as possible without giving any consideration to the spot weve selected I promise you the place you put your butt on the ground is very important It often seems that coyotes are born with some supernatural gift They know where to approach your stand so you cant see them until its too late Or it could be that theyre predators and they do this for a living Regardless of which explanation you prefer coyotes are going to use the terrain to their advantage The name of the game is outsmarting them Here are a few keys to selecting the right place to sit Find a vantage point that allows you to watch as much area as possible I cant tell you how many times Ive sat down and started calling then realized if Id walked another 50 yards I could have seen more country Take a few extra moments and select the ideal spot to sit This is sometimes difficult the first time you call a stand However at the end of your stand is a perfect time to everything perfectly blow the prettiest rabbit serenade you ever heard and still walk away empty handed Wind sun calls camouflage none of it matters if there arent coyotes there I break scouting into two classifications general and serious There are a couple of general scouting methods that are effective I call it general scouting because you have a general idea where they are but not an exact
