Predator Xtreme - Feb 2012
51 www PredatorXtreme com FEBRUARY 2012 your vehicle where approaching coyotes cant see it Leave an open area down wind More often than not coyotes will try to catch your scent as they approach This is especially true of mature coyotes Position yourself or your partner to watch the downwind side Be quiet Unnecessary noise will spook any animal youre pursuing and coyotes are no exception Walk quietly to your stand Be sure your calls arent banging together as you walk Use common sense and be as stealthy as possible This just might make the difference when you have a coyote bedded close to your stand Call with the sun at your back as frequently as possible This offers you a huge advantage as you can easily see the coyotes approaching It also makes it more difficult for them to spot movement if the sun is in their eyes Keep movement to an absolute minimum Coyotes are watching you more frequently than you realize If they spot movement theyll likely be gone before you even know they were there Success Is Our Reward For more than two decades Ive tried to analyze my successes and failures to determine their cause Occasionally Ive seen something crazy like a coyote running right past my truck to get to the call However this is absolutely an exception to the rule I firmly believe we must do all we can to stack the odds in our favor We must do everything right then let the chips fall where they may In the perfect area on the perfect weekend my partner and I have killed as many as 20 coyotes in two days I also recall many days without a single coyote in the back of the truck Thats what coyote hunting is all about Its about the challenge of fooling a predator The game is never the same two days in a row If it werent for the tough days in the field the amazing days wouldnt mean as much The best way for us to improve is to learn from our mistakes and do it better next time If youre new to the sport and youre not having immediate success dont give up Weve all been there and had to earn our stripes I guarantee that avoiding these common mistakes as well as learning from your own will bring you greater success Editors Note Dustin has been calling predators for nearly 20 years He has competed in coyote calling contests around the Western U S for more than a dozen years and has consistently excelled including many wins and top finishes He enjoys sharing his knowledge of predator hunting with others through calling seminars and magazine articles To learn more about Dustin or the equipment he uses visit www predatordown com
