then split off toward even more sand dunes After traveling over a mile from our first setup we located a small dune beside the road that was large enough to conceal the Jeep We parked and quietly walked toward the east looking for an area that looked feasible We soon found ourselves at the upper end of the arroyo we had followed with several small gullies fanning out in a general northwestern direction There was an opening at the base a small dune of maybe 20 yards across and over 100 yards wide that gave us a good shooting area but any coyote could easily pop up at 20 yards without being seen Beyond that lay a huge mesquite and chaparral covered dune that stretched out for over a mile This gave us a descent view of the sloping face of the large dune and hopefully we would be able to pick up the movement of an approaching coyote By now a slight morning 60 www PredatorXtreme com FEBRUARY 2012 breeze was detectable and we positioned the FOXPRO nearly straight down wind hoping that any coyote coming off the dune would be forced to enter open ground before he could get to the caller Once we were settled in and ready we started the machine playing a distressed jackrabbit on medium volume After playing the caller for over five minutes Wayne slowly started raising the volume in small increments After 10 minutes we backed off the volume then switched the sound to a more raspy toned jackrabbit at a high volume in order to push the sound out farther Another five minutes of some pretty loud rabbit distress and I detected movement on the brushy slope ahead of us about 60 yards out A single jackrabbit bolted from cover and ran toward the left of our position It was quickly followed by another fast paced jackrabbit This was a sure signal that something was approaching and it was coming fast We re positioned for a shot moving our shooting sticks slightly almost at the very instant we started catching glimpses of the fast moving coyote through the brush The dog entered a low spot at the very bottom of the arroyo and dropped out of sight for what seemed like minutes then reemerged at the edge of the brush right in front of the caller at 20 yards Wayne swung to the target flicked off the safety and stroked the trigger The coyote tumbled headlong into the opening another brush wolf finished Our thick country calling technique had worked like magic again One of the first rules of any hunting is to hunt em where they live A little time spent in the field scouting will save countless non productive setups Look for the places that coyotes call home The thicker the better
