Lead Dog From The Readers First Coyotes On May 1 2011 it was my stepdaughters birthday and for a little guy time I took my 11 year old son Seth out for a quick dog hunt before our house was full of 8 to 9 year old girls Hes been hunting many times with me in the past and knew what was expected but this was his first time as the shooter We set up with our backs to a small popular bluff looking into a clearing about 100 yards across My son was carrying an H R single shot in 223 Rem He was to my left and slightly ahead We were using the PX shift something I learned in your magazine Approximately five minutes into the calling a combination of fawn and jack rabbit distress I spotted a large pale coyote step from the woods directly across from us I made a low squeak to coax him closer and with that he began angling to our right to cut our wind I told Seth to get ready and shoot when he stops Seth nodded and thumbed back the hammer At about 15 to 17 yards I woofed to stop the dog before he could catch our scent but before he had slowed Seths 223 barked and the coyote dropped in his tracks Seeing the expression on my sons face could only be described as ecstatic His first dog Our first dog Trent Alberta Canada If you have a predator hunting tip unique picture or a cool hunting story to tell we want it If your submission appears in PX youll receive a gift certificate for PX Gear All submissions must include a picture Send letters to Mark Olis at P O Box 698 Birmingham AL 35201 or send e mails to molis@ grandviewmedia com 6 www PredatorXtreme com FEBRUARY 2012 Three coyotes heard my calls and rose from the cut wheat My heart sunk as they approached because my son Grant was out of position downwind I feared he wouldnt get a shot At 14 he had seen his share of coyotes coming to the call but had yet to connect When these stopped at 1000 yards and bedded down again I snuck over to my son We belly crawled closer and called but they stayed bedded down out of range He had tried for so many stands that I really wanted this one for him We crawled back out and circled around a big draw in order to approach the coyotes from the downwind side Once settled in our stands I let loose a distress sound on the Tweety call A lone coyote sat up looked at us from 200 yards and yawned Grant took his time and just as he squeezed the trigger the wind gusted and his shot went right Two other coyotes sprung up and it was on He cycled the bolt and stayed with his coyote slinging lead with his Savage 243 Finally one of the three rolled at 260 yards and Grant had his first coyote Steve Washington
