hunting would be between 9 p.m. and
midnight. How about the setting of the
moon? If the moon is to set at 8 p.m.
when would we want to be hunting?
Since the setting of the moon carries the
three hours after the set, the best times
would be between 8 - 11 p.m. Even if
you plan on hunting the whole night
make sure to pay attention to the moon
and you may be surprised what you find.

Putting it all Together
Let’s take a second and go over the outline. Here is how to plan your next hunt
using this method. The first thing I am
looking for is the percentage of illumination. The more light the moon is putting
off, the greater the pressure on predators
to move. I like to hunt with 50 percent
illumination or better. The second is the
rise or fall of the moon. Remember, it is
the first three hours before the rise and
the three hours after the setting that seem
to carry the most power over predators.
The third thing to consider is “prime
time.” This is the last two hours before
sunset and the first two hours after sunrise. Coupling all three of these together
creates a powerhouse of opportunity but,
even using one or two of them will
increase your odds in the field. Here is
how I would rate each piece of the
moons puzzle:

GOOD: The rise or setting of the moon on
any day.
BETTER: The rise or setting of the moon
coupled with high illumination.
BEST: The rise or setting of the moon and
high illumination during prime time.
My Hunting Schedule
I can basically plan out my hunting schedule far in advance with this system.
Provided there are no other factors that
may inhibit predator movement, such as
wind, rain or snow, I will stick to this outline. When planning hunts you look
should for all of the prime ingredients to
line up, making the perfect hunt. The
prime factors are percentage of illumination, and the rise or set of the moon combined with prime time.
For example, in December 2010 these
are the times I will be out calling predators. These times are tailored to my home
state of Massachusetts.
These times combine all three ingredients to make the perfect time to be
hunting — a high percentage of illumination coupled with both sunrise or sunset
and the setting or rise of the moon.
These are six days I will not miss this
