Coyotes and cattle go hand
in hand like macaroni salads
and summer family reunions.
When you find one you find
the other. Despite this one-sided
relationship where coyotes take
advantage of any cow or calf
that hits the dirt many ranchers
are still leery of hunters setting
up within rifle range of their
livestock. That was the case
several years back when I tried
to waylay several coyotes that
not only sauntered through a
large herd of black baldy cows,
but often bedded right on the
fringe of the herd.
When I received permission
to hunt the rancher was
adamant about me not hunting
near his cows. Despite my
long-range calls, I couldn’t
lure the dogs away from the
